Artist statement by Rohan Wealleans
Planet Earth Geology Department is a science fiction created in paint, a hybrid that hovers between the world of painting and the world of sculpture. Strange excavations of colour and form are laid out for examination like specimens in a scientific display. Planetary surfaces are presented in their entirety along with an alien inhabitant.
Curatorial statement by Rachel Kent:
Auckland artist Rohan Wealleans constructs strange and intricate assemblages out of paint and everyday materials including polystyrene, rope, fishing buoys and ceramic beads. Their pendulous forms, web-like ornamentation and heavily encrusted surfaces are both beautiful and oppressive; and their titles often suggest a tribal or shamanistic logic. Accumulation is central to Wealleans’ artworks, which feature dozens of coats of house-paint that the artist then cuts back with a Stanley knife, revealing striations of colour like the growth-rings of an ancient tree. A painter who works with objects, Wealleans layers materials and meanings with the ease of a conjurer.
