Curatorial statement by Deeksha Nath
Ved Gupta traveled from his native state Bihar to Baroda to study art and develop a language to express his frustration with the corruption of the bureaucratic machinery he experienced first hand, the extreme disparities in wealth that exist alongside the upbeat note of India’s economic development. The themes of gluttony, corruption, and oppression caused by unchecked power are pervasive in Ved’s work.
Ved has a deliberately limited sculpture vocabulary. His journey of sculpted form has taken him from ceramics to terracotta and he now uses fiberglass to construct his figures and objects. He uses paint to highlight sculptural features but his primary preoccupation is with three-dimensional form and the ways in which it speaks directly to the viewer, by carving out a space for itself and invading the presence of the other.
